For those who are engaged in studying, the value of using your study time shrewdly by being super-organized and super-productive is an absolute must.
So how valuable would it be if we could tell you one simple little technique that can make you more productive straight away? How much time could you save and how much more productive could you be over the entire course of your studies (keeping in mind that your "studies" could be anywhere from 1 to 10 years depending on what grade you are currently in?)
The good news is that even though the technique I am about to share with you will have a major impact on how productive you are it is still very easy to use and very easy to understand. Now how often can you say that?
The name of this technique is the "Two Minute Rule". A productivity specialist by the name of David Allen created it and has been espousing its brilliance ever since. So let's take a look at the way it dramatically improves your productivity and reduces your distractions.
Whenever an interruption to your study time (or any time that is important to you or your success) occurs you simply ask yourself: "Can I resolve this disruption in two minutes or less?"
If you believe you can handle the interruption within two minutes then you address it straight away. You do whatever you need to do to resolve the disruption. Then once you have resolved you go back to what you were doing (studying hopefully!) On the other hand, if you don't think it can be handled within two minutes then simply put it on your to-do list and note to address it later.
That's the long and the short of the two minute rule. Pretty easy really! No complications and no confusion.
Now even though this may seem like an easy concept that's a bit too simple to work - it's also a very powerful tool if you can stick to it. The fact is, distractions are absolutely everywhere (think about TV, cell phones and your computer for a start!) and they constantly eat up our time which in turn leads to us being less productive. This is not what we need when we are desperately trying to get some study done.
By using the two minute rule it also means you can address distractions as they happen and address them very quickly - in two minutes or less! By giving yourself two minutes to take action you are setting a standard for how quickly you are going to tackle and resolve the distraction.
A second advantage of using this technique is that you are consistently making a list of those things you need to get done (those things that take longer than two minutes!) By doing this, you are making yourself far more organised - another great habit to get in to.
Simple idea? You bet. Will it increase your productivity and help eliminate distractions? It sure will. Will you become an organizational guru if you use this technique? You just might! When you handle distractions as soon as they arise (either by adding them to a list or taking care of them in two minutes or less) you will find that you start achieving far more in far less time - the essence of productivity. Give it a go for a week, a month and then a year. You will be very surprised by what you can achieve in just two minutes or less!
