Drywall Installation Do's And Don'ts

By Carol Richardson

If you have been working with your drywall for a long, then installing drywall shouldn't be a problem at all. To prevent the drywall from cracking and to achieve a successful repair, it is vital to avoid common mistakes during the process. Below are some tips on how to install drywall properly.

Before fastening the panel, trim the edges to prevent the drywall from breaking. This is important, especially if you'll be running into an outlet hole during the repair. Measure the panel accurately before drilling nails into it. Do not overlook this tip if you want a professional-looking drywall hanging in your house.

Without a doubt, taping drywall seams and joints can get time-consuming and require a lot of skill to get it right. If you're a beginner, look for larger drywall panels to minimize the number of joints to be covered up. This shouldn't be a problem since drywall is an inexpensive building material.

Make sure there are enough backing and support at the edges to make it easy to fasten the drywall. Leave at least 1 inch of visible framing at corners before fastening the panel. Do not commit the mistake of framing inside corners since this can only damage the drywall.

To prevent the drywall from cracking anytime soon, avoid installing drywall at the door and window corners. Measure and notch the panel before hanging exterior walls on windows. You can avoid making a joint by notching the drywall around the openings.

To make it easier installing the corner bead, always make it a point to install the tapered edges along an outside corner. Doing this keeps you from applying multiple layers of mud to conceal the corner bead. However, you can also use non-tapered edges if it gets tricky for you.

For an added support, make sure your drywall has a back frame installed behind it. Do not miss the studs by marking the framing locations before drilling. Installing framing is important since they secure the drywall and keep it from collapsing.

If you are not comfortable in repairing drywall on your own, you can always ask help from professionals for guaranteed results. Observe how the experts install drywall properly before attempting to go solo in the future.
