Stop Looking So Angry!

By Dern Heatherton

Botox is relatively uncomplicated, both in the delivery and the results achieved. This is one of the many reasons that Botox is the world's leading non-invasive cosmetic procedure. No other procedure comes close.

Not surprisingly, the treatment of the frown lines is one of the most popular treatment procedures for Botox patients. Botox makes your frown lines disappear. The reason is simple mechanics, based on the underlying muscles that cause the wrinkles to occur. The corresponding muscle can no longer contract. So, the end result is that it can no longer wrinkle up the overlying skin.

Again, the most common area of treatment with Botox is the frown line between the eyes. In fact, when Botox Cosmetic was approved by the FDA in 2002, the approval indication was for frown lines. In addition to the fact that frown lines are a major area of concern for patients is the fact that the market was driven by extremely high levels of satisfaction among patient end users. Botox relaxes the frown. Some say it takes away that "angry" look and makes them more approachable. The end result is a more refreshed and relaxed appearance.

As common sense dictates, you should be in generally good physical health. As well, you need to inform your physician about any drugs you are taking. The medical history should include hormones (oral contraceptives and estrogen replacement) and even aspirin, vitamins, and herbal medications since these substances can interfere with blood clotting or interact with medications used during surgery and could increase surgical risk.

Before surgery, even minor treatments such as BOTOX, patients should be educated about all aspects of the planned treatment, including whether to discontinue certain medications and stop smoking.

To achieve optimal results, doctors recommend that patients take the following precautionary measures:

- Before engaging in strenuous activity or exercise, give yourself 24 hours

- For 4-5 hours after the injections, try not to take a nap or lay down

- Avoid massaging the treated area

- Practice daily facial exercises as directed by your doctor

- Sun block is an absolute must

It is best to restrict muscle movements during the immediate Botox recovery period to let the agent settle.

Normally, a Botox treatment should last you between three and six months, depending on the treatment area and the severity of the problems. After those six months, facial lines and wrinkles will start to reappear, though not as prominently as prior to the procedure. At that time, patients may choose to repeat the process. Repeated Botox procedures will be lasting progressively longer with each treatment. As such, a patient will require fewer procedures to achieve their desired results.
