Information Relating To Detroit Animal Control

By Roxanne Cruz

There are so many homeless dogs roaming around the streets of Detroit. These dogs are the cause of many human-animal conflict reports in the town. Detroit animal control involves a small group of highly dedicated individuals who wish to free their streets from stray dogs and other animals.

The swelling in numbers of stray dogs can be attributed to some factors which are common to Detroit. For instance, the number of officers in charge of catching and rehabilitating strays are few compared to the population of homeless dogs. This factor is the major reason as to why the fight against the surging number of canines has been a total failure.

The unbalanced ratio of strays and officers is what makes the population of free roaming canines to be high in this town. Many rescued animals are euthanized since they cannot be fully catered for by the few individuals in the field. This is not right. So to say the least, it is crucial that more officers are employed to deal with the problem of stray dogs if this population is expected to fall.

The ratio of available control officers to that of strays is so unbalanced in this city. This makes it very difficult for the officers to cater for the needs of all dogs that they capture. Therefore, the number of homeless dogs that are euthanized is high due to the fact that the facilities available for their caring are very limited.

Cases where rescued canines are infected with diseases are quite common. Some of the diseases which affect strays include rabies and mange. Dogs that are infected with these illnesses can be dangerous since a single bite from them can be fatal. So as part of their rehabilitation, the control officers are charged with the responsibility of ensuring that all rescued animals are fully treated before they are adopted.

Officers who are experienced in controlling the numbers of stray animals incorporate community outreach in their process. Educating people on the importance of reporting all cases of dog attacks will help in reducing the number of dogs being killed. Control officers also try to improve the speed with which they respond to animal attack reports. Involving police officers in response to reports is also important.

Enough funds should be set aside for fighting the resurgence in numbers of stray dogs in this city. Instead of just depending on the funds trickling from the central government, residents can come together and contribute the little they have towards this worthy cause. The problem of this city should be handled by all residents as if it is their personal problem.

A couple of tests are performed to strays when they are being rehabilitated. These tests are meant to ensure that a dog does not attack and injure its master once it is given out for adoption. Officers who are employed in the Detroit animal control department carry out temperament and aggression training to canines while they are still in their care.
