Understanding EMP Protection Is Important For Your Survival

By Paulette Short

We have become highly dependent on our electronic devices. They control everything from our water supply to our daily communication. In fact, our lives would be dramatically changed without them. Therefore, understanding how to protect electronic devices from an electromagnetic Pulse is wise. Below is more information about EMP protection and how to store devices.

Research estimates that seventy to 90% of American citizens can be dead inside a year after an electromagnetic pulse. There are a couple of types. The first is man-made and stems from a nuclear discharge. The alternative is natural and occurs because of the sun. Both methods are evenly destructive and may annihilate all electrical devices in its range. This will include our electrical grid.

Nevertheless, this kind of phenomenon is survivable. But, people have to learn about it and then prepare. Everyone will be out without water, lights, and electricity. It's because of our extreme dependence on electrical gadgets, and our centralized energy sources, this will change life as we know it. The event will be instantaneous and that means the damage will be sudden and catastrophic.

The most important devices to protect are generators. These can supply basic electricity for basic survival. For instance, a small generator can run a water pump. It can also charge batteries for things like cell phones and portable radios. The best way to protect a generator is to use a Faraday shield.

This sort of shielding it is possible to make using any appropriate conducting material. A stove uses this sort of shielding to defend users from radiation. In fact, elevators were created to defend its occupants from electromagnetic fields generated once the elevator is moving. What is needed is ingenuity and creativity to make a shield.

Radios and communication gadgets such as satellite cell phones are also items that can be protected. They are small, which means heavy aluminum foil can protect them. However, do not let the foil touch the items. Instead, wrap them in cloth or paper first. Then, apply three layers of heavy aluminum foil. This should do the trick.

Another idea is to take a heavy aluminum trashcan and line it with several layers of cloth. Alternatively, anything non-conductive can be used to wrap the inside of the can. However, a heavy cloth is more durable and will resist tears. If possible use at least three layers to make sure the electronics are well insulated from the metal. This offers a double layer of protection since the items are first wrapped in aluminum foil and then stored in the aluminum can.

Saving electronics from the devastating EMP pulse can mean the difference between comfortably surviving or living badly after the attack. It will not take much preparation add the rewards will be immense. Vital communication and broadcasting will be maintained. This is central to have in a disaster; as well as having flowing water.

These are only a couple of suggestions about EMP protection. There are many books and websites out there to help people prepare for a bad situation. Moreover, it does not use much cash to protect these basic survival items.
